Where did all the great art made in the Church go?
It used to be that if you wanted to see or hear or touch great art, you went to a church.
Paintings. Symphonies. Stained glass. Sculpture.
Even the church building used to be a great work of art to God.
Where is it now?
Now we have reproductions of mainstream art. Something to look like, sound like, feel like what everyone else is doing but with the Church message.
We have the Creator as our God.
Do you not think He could give us some creativity as the Church?
Do you not think He could inspire something of our own?
Do you not think we could express His glory with more than a borrowed style?
Let us then, as far as we can, strive for being God’s artists.
Creating for it’s own sake, for His glory.
Let us never settle for something “good enough”, because that will never be good enough for our worship.
Let us never lower our standards because we are “only” in church.
Let us use our traditions and influences, making them our own as we grow.
Let us constantly push ourselves to be better at our crafts, to express the glory of the Holy One better and better.
Let us push those artist around us, as siblings in Christ, to higher places, both in heart and in craft.
Let us, again, seek the Creator as we did in our youth, that we may find the wellspring of life.
Let us always give our very best work, for absolutely nothing else is a fitting offering.
Let us never back down from this.
Then, maybe, Church art will be a city on a hill, that no one cannot see or hear or touch.
Then, maybe, we will make ourselves whole in Him.
Then, maybe, His glory will shine above all else, for all to know.
This is my goal. This is my heart.
This is the fire shut up inside my very bones.
This is my passion.
